Giclee Prints
This is a fancy French name (pronounced, Gee’clay) galleries love to use. Giclee means to spray which is exactly what it is – ink jet printing. Remember ten years ago when artists were selling prints of an edition of thousands that were printed on a standard printing press? This is the new generation. It’s the closest we have come to cloning the original picture. No system of dots like the old days that can be seen under a magnifying glass. It has all the tones, colors and sharp detail of the original art. They’re not cheap. The printer can make only a few each day. It’s slower than watching paint dry and I have waited for a lot of paint to dry.
The printer is not your ordinary printer. The one that makes these prints is big. It’s an Epson Stylus Pro 11880 and can print paper almost two meters wide. (google, Epson Printer – images)
The new inks are just as amazing. Epson Ultra Chrome K3 ink is bright and will last 100 years, longer than you or I ever will. The paper is a heavy 315g digital fine art paper. It is 100% cotton and absolutely acid free. Behind glass it too will last 100 years and with UV protection glass the time is upped to 260 years.
The ones you can buy here are the same size as the original pictures.
